I would also recommend checking the website or Facebook page before going to make sure the gorge itself is open. The hike itself was quite intense! There is initially a pretty obvious trail on the left but eventually you just have to pick a place to cross the river. We ended up backtracking a little to find a shallower spot. We passed a smaller waterfall on the right of the river that could easily be missed. Once you reach the big waterfall itself there are huge rocks to climb around or over.
But it was definitely worth it! I felt like I earned that beautiful view! For me the whole hike was exciting and adventurous, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

About an hour of waiting the ranger supervisor opened up 20 more slots for the day but we had bad internet connection and couldn't purchase it so they took down my name and had us go to the gouge for free. We were so appreciative as we drove almost 3hrs to get there.
The walk to the gorge was a little rough for my son as he fell a couple times but he was a great trooper and it was worth it after we got there and he was able to swim. On the way back was a breeze compared to going.

The water will be very cold in December. Not suitable for swimming. The area often gets snow in Dec. And January. The trail is treacherous and requires good supportive hiking shoes. It is not a good trail for people who are not fit or have heart, back or other medical comorbidies. Read all replies. There is a campground very close. It looked nice. I hope to go back and camp there. What are crocs? Everyone says not to wear them on thia hike so i want to make sure i don't get them anyways are you talking about wearing regular water shoes like the kind you wear when you go swimming at splash country??
Hopefully it'll be warm enough to go swimming by the end of the month or first week of oct cause that's when ill be able to come can't wait to swim in this beautiful waterfall. They are a type of sandal. Best bet would be an old pair of tennis shoes the river bed has large rocks.

We got TO the falls themselves around AM and there were only two other people there before us. By the time we left around one, there were probably 50 people there and many more on the trail headed down to the falls.
Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. Reward is worth it! We read some tips beforehand, and we all managed to do pretty well. We also read online that we needed to buy passes in advance to be able to hike to the gorge. We did see some people get turned away, so make sure you have a pass. Wear good shoes for the hike. We all tripped several times along the dry trail on roots and such.
The trail along the river definitely needs a shoe with a good, non-slip sole with good support. We changed shoes at the end of the dry trail into water shoes. The rocks can get pretty slick, so take your time.
The falls are a great relief from the heat after the hike. Life vests are required for kids under The trail would be difficult with small children under 5, and it is highly discouraged to not bring children 2 and under. We brought walking sticks which was very helpful.

There is now a safety video you must watch before hiking. If you plan to hike down to the gorge and upstream to the waterfall you must now buy a gorge permit. They limit the number of permits per day and they do tend to sell out quickly.
So buy your gorge permits early! If you do not want to hike the gorge you do not need a permit, but the parking lot does fill up quickly. It is best to get there right at 8am, otherwise you may be turned away. The hike up top to the overlook and top of the waterfall is not very difficult.
